US church in race row for refusing to wed black couple
A race row has broken out in Mississippi after a black couple were turned away from the church in which they planned to get married. Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson had set the date and posted the invitations but, the day before the wedding, the pastor of the predominantly white First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs said the ceremony would not go ahead. He told them a small number of church members had virulently opposed holding the event at the church, and he faced being sacked if he went ahead with it. The church in Crystal Springs, a 5000-strong suburb of the state capital Jackson, was founded in 1883 and no black couple has ever been married there. Miss Wilson, who regularly attended the church, said: "A wedding is a Christian ceremony. Where's the Christianity in there? My nine-year-old daughter was going to the church with us. How would you say to your nine-year-old, 'We cannot get married here because, guess what sweetie, we're black'." "I blame those members who knew and call themselves Christians and didn't stand up. I feel like it was blatant racial discrimination." Pastor Stan Weatherford, who is white, said he wanted to go ahead with the wedding but decided to carry it out elsewhere as a compromise. He moved it to a mostly black church nearby, where he married the couple on July 21. Casey Kitchens, 37, who is a member of the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs, said she and most of the congregation were "ashamed" at the refusal to marry a black couple, and that they had known nothing about it. She said: "I can't fathom why. How unfair. How unjust. It's just wrong."
Why is Apple discriminating against Iranian Americans
IMAGINE if your ethnicity determined which products you were able to buy. Or if sales clerks required you to divulge your ancestry before swiping your credit card. Some of us don’t have to imagine. Last month, Sahar Sabet, a 19-year-old Iranian-American woman, was improperly prevented from buying an iPad at an Apple store in Alpharetta, Ga. After she had gone over the various options with two Apple sales clerks, a third clerk, who had overheard Ms. Sabet speaking Persian to her uncle, intervened. He asked what language they were speaking and, when he found out it was the language of Iran, he said she could not buy anything because “our countries do not have good relations” — never mind that she intended to give it to her sister in North Carolina. A local news account had Ms. Sabet describing a cousin in Iran as the intended recipient, an inaccuracy that was propagated last week in a Wall Street Journal opinion article defending Apple’s discriminatory behavior. An isolated episode could be dismissed as the work of one bigoted, or misguided, employee. But there have been other recent reports of Apple employees refusing to sell to customers of Iranian descent. In Santa Monica, Calif., two friends looking to buy an iPhone were asked whether they were speaking Persian and promptly informed, “I am sorry, we don’t sell to Persians.” In Sacramento, an Iranian-American man looking to buy Apple products for personal use mentioned that he was also thinking about buying an iPod for his nephew in Iran and was told he could not buy anything, even for himself. An Iranian student in Atlanta, and his Iranian-American friend, were not permitted to buy an iPhone after the friend, under questioning, mentioned that the student planned to return to Iran for the summer. Apple has not been taken over by xenophobes. The discrimination is one result of trying to enforce flawed and haphazard United States export controls against countries, like Iran, that are under sanctions. Retail employees are left to interpret and implement federal policy, and racial profiling results. At the moment, nearly all exports to Iran are prohibited. Traveling to Iran with items like computers and smartphones is illegal. Apple’s own policy, stated on its Web site, makes it very clear that its products can’t be sent there...

Not allowing African Americans to drink out of the same water fountains, go to the same schools, or even wait in the same waiting rooms as whites. Having those of darker skin color restricted from living in certain areas, only being able to use certain facilities due to their skin color. Prejudice, a preconceived opinion, can bee seen through Jewish history, where Jews are judged without any factual evidence, leading to unfair treatment. A modern day example is the perception of foreigners not viewed as equals, by certain people.
Hurricane Katrina:The government had known for years that a big hurricane was likely to cause dangerous flooding in New Orleans. The plans they made didn’t include any way to get poor people (predominately African Americans) out of the city to safety. When the storm and the flooding did come with Hurricane Katrina in 2005, much of the country saw on TV that thousands of people of color were stranded in the city without food, water, housing or safety. The government was incredibly slow to rescue people, to provide food and shelter, and to help them rebuild their houses. Many people believe that if those stranded had been mostly white people the rescue efforts would have been much quicker and effective (or those responsible for the inadequate response would have all been fired from their jobs). When money did become available to start rebuilding, the first federal contracts went to white businessmen, so that white people accumulated more wealth as a result of the disaster.
Racial Profiling: "A young Latino man I know has been stopped by the police many times while he was driving his car, when he had done nothing to break the law. They stopped him for apparently no reason and asked to check his license and registration and looked inside his car. I’m a white man. I’ve been driving for far more years than he has and have never been stopped under those circumstances." Studies across the country have shown that “African Americans were two to three times more likely to be pulled over and searched [while driving], yet no more likely to be engaged in any criminal activity than white Americans.” (The Covenant, 2006)
summary of article: The Arabic nation gave birth to “The man on fire” December 18,2010, when local Tunisia vendor Mohammed Bouazizi revolted against police and government corruption and by setting himself into a burst of flames. witnesses of the incident claim that forty-five year old female police officer Faida Hambi, slapped him across the face, spat on him and insulted his dead father after confiscating his illegal goods. Washington Post sates that “Mohammed had been harassed, and insulted multiple occasions”. That Saturday evening Mohammed attempted to pay his dept., and report the rude officer to higher authorities, but was ignored and thrown out of the Provincial headquarters facility. Mohammed returned later that evening and in front of the facility poured kerosene on himself and lit the match that sparked him into complete flames. Time magazine states that prior to the spark of the flames witnesses heard Mohammed shout “If you won’t see me, I’ll burn myself, How do you expect me to make a living?” Although Mohammed no longer walks the streets he called home, his death had not been in vain. Mohammed Bouazizi's actions go down in history as the steroid that strengthened the anger and intolerance of social and political issues in the country of Tunisia. Not only did Mohammed receive recognition for his actions from his family and country, Ask Men Weekly recognized him as the 6th man of the year stating “It was the slap that was heard around the world”.
linking: this is racial discrimination in Tunisia, which is similar to the racial discrimination in Merchant Of Venice. Prince of Morocco was a black, and was discriminated by Portia who was a white. Even though Portia did not openly insulted Prince of Morocco, Portia played with her words well, and used the pun of "fair". On the surface it sounded like Portia was a lady of fair judgement and was not racist, however, Portia is actually making fun of Prince of Morocco's dark skin color. irony is used in this case. Hence, there was racial discrimination in MOV.
First time in Olympic history where all countries sent women for the games
The official opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics take place Friday in London, but the Games have already made history: This is the first Olympics in which all of the more than 200 participating countries have sent female athletes to compete. The U.S. team has more women than men for the first time — 269 female athletes to 261 men.
Are toilets a feminist issue? In New Delhi, according to the New York Times, there are more than 1,500 public restrooms for men and only 132 for women. The burden of bad sanitation affects almost all poor people but it falls disproportionately on females: in urban areas, there is a fee for most public washrooms, but men can use urinals for free and they frequently relieve themselves in public when facilities are lacking. In rural areas, where most people have to defecate openly, women are often subject to harassment or assault when they relieve themselves. To avoid the need to urinate, they often withhold hydration, a practice resulting in high rates of urinary-tract infections, heatstroke and other health problems. And coping with menstruation in the absence of privacy, water or sanitary products can be a nightmare.
Discrimination against people from Henan: Because of its largest farmer population in China, huge quantities of rural migrant workers in cities, and continuous emigrating refugees and victims resulted from natural calamities and political tragedies in the 20th century, many of the rural farmers and migrant workers from this area suffered abusive consequences in this privileged state system and snobbish media context.
Discrimination against people in Beijing: Because Peking dwellers enjoy the privileges powered by the central authorities, they are vested interests beneficiaries in the so-called counter-discriminators' eyes, therefore suffering hostilities and disdain from time to time by people from other regions in this country.
Discrimination against people in Shanghai: As the migrants - majority of them come from southeast to southcentral areas of china - flow increasingly into Shanghai, they are often blamed for the rising crime and unemployment. Shanghai Hukou is very important and attractive to those people who lack and chase for it, for it brings much convenience and welfare to those who hold it, consequently, sometimes Shanghai dwellers are also despised and counter-discriminated by people from other regions in this country which is based on privileges and hedged by vested interest groups.
In both Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Region of People's Republic of China, there are some people who discriminated against the mainland Chinese, call them as "the mainland Aberdeen", meaning that from the mainland Immigrants from provinces/autonomous zones outside of Guangdong Province who are predominantly Mandarin-speaking and have no knowledge of indigenous languages such as Cantonese, Teochew, or Hakka, are called "Beilao“ or ”Beigu" (literally, ”Northern guys“ or "Northern sluts"). In particular, at the beginning of 1980s, a period during which Guangdong saw a massive influx of out-of-province immigrant workers who did not have the habit of taking shower at a regular basis, are especially socially distanced.
China restricts Ramadan fasting in restive Xinjiang
Authorities in China's restive north-western region of Xinjiang have banned Muslim officials and students from fasting during Ramadan, prompting an exiled rights group to warn of new violence.
Guidance posted on numerous government websites called on Communist Party leaders to restrict Muslim religious activities during the holy month, including fasting and visiting mosques.
Xinjiang is home to around nine million Uighurs, a Turkic speaking, largely Muslim ethnic minority, many of whom accuse China's leaders of religious and political persecution. The region has been rocked by repeated outbreaks of ethnic violence, but China denies claims of repression and relies on tens of thousands of Uighur officials to help it govern Xinjiang.
A statement from Zonglang township in Xinjiang's Kashgar district said that "the county committee has issued comprehensive policies on maintaining social stability during the Ramadan period. It is forbidden for Communist Party cadres, civil officials (including those who have retired) and students to participate in Ramadan religious activities."

Women workers get "positive discrimination rights" in Britain
Under the Equalities Bill, companies will be encouraged to positively discriminate in favour of women job candidates.Firms will also be forced to publish details of how much men and women are paid, Harriet Harman, the Equality Minister, has disclosed.
The controversial moves are designed to promote more women to senior roles and to close the gender pay gap.
Miss Harman said: "Most women are going out to work and they are just as committed to their jobs - the money that they earn is important to the household budget so they should be paid fairly.Yet listen to this figure - if you are a woman working part-time you get 40 per cent less per hour on average than a man working full-time.Now either this is because women are not up to the job or else there is discrimination against them. You can't challenge discrimination when it's kept swept under the carpet."
The Equalities Bill will also seek to stop pensioners being denied NHS treatment because of their age. Ministers want to stop elderly people being patronised by doctors following complaints of pensioners being fobbed off by GPs and denied health, travel and car insurance.
Ministers hope the Bill will promote a new era of openness on pay following pressure from trade unions for mandatory pay audits to make sure women are not receiving less money than men for doing the same job.
Age discrimination in the workplace has been illegal since 2006, but the new legislation will tackle more widespread forms of age-related prejudice. Plans mean companies will also be encouraged to positively discriminate in favour of job candidates from ethnic minorities.
